Be Careful Who You Follow"Take heed that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray." Mark 13:5-6 I was reading a woman's revelation of how she became involved in what the woman now believes was a cult. As I read of what she explains was her slow manipulation by a sect she is no longer affiliated with, I couldn't help but wonder if the lady was failing to accept any responsibility on her own part; the fact everything was presumably "the cult's" fault. While a true cult will often employ brainwashing tactics, such as sleep-deprivation and the like, this case sounded more like a series of poor choices. For example, she joined the group of her own free will, chose to follow their belief system even though she insists she did not agree with it, and freely admits she did not have the courage to speak up or walk away when things she saw and heard did not sit well with her. The most serious of these poor chocies comes to light as she explains that, within a short time of joining this particular sect, she made the founder "her god." I was instantly reminded of how men and women blindly bowed to men like Jim Jones, Charles Manson, and David Koresh; their followers believing they were Jesus Christ. The end result of such an choice is always disastrous. The above Bible verse clearly warns us that many people will come into the world claiming to be the risen Christ. However, any time we lift man up to the place where only the Divine (God) sits, we will surely be led astray, for there is only one true God, and His Son Jesus Christ who is truly worthy of being revered and called King of kings and Lord of lords. Be careful, my friend, for we are called to follow God, not man.
