Dialogue"If not by our own merits, how then shall we earn this thing which your Director will grant us?" Dubious wanted to know. "We do not - in fact, are not capable of - earning it. It is a gift." Replied New Creature. "It is free?" asked Dubious. "Free to you," came the reply, "but He Himself paid a great price." "We are so worthy that He would do this?" "No, we are so unworthy that He had no other way to redeem us. But His care for us left Him no choice." "And what does He ask in return?" "Only trust and allegiance to Him who rightly rules us anyway." "Bah!" belched Dubious. "If it is free, what is to stop one from accepting His gift yet doing as one pleases?" "One would not then be trusting, would one?" "Why should one trust Him more than another?" "If one cannot trust He who cancels our greatest debt, who can one trust? He has done this for me, unworthy as I am." "If you and I are equally unworthy, why shall you be granted this thing and not I?" asked Dubious. "He who acknowledges no Redeemer, has no Redeemer. "How have you knowledge of such things?" "All this I've learned from the Book of the Director." Dubious only turned, muttering to himself about his own worthiness being adequate. Knowing it was not, New Creature sadly watched his retreat. Nor was his own worthiness adequate, he knew, but his trust and allegiance would grant Him the thing all longed for.
