The Mind of the Spirit

Many people involved in New Age or Post-Modern thought believe they are gods. They do not believe in a personal God. But they believe they can tap into some impersonal and ultimate "force" like Luke Skywalker and become gods themselves. To put it another way, they believe they are ascending the scale of evolution toward divinity and will become gods. As a result, they believe they can have the mind of God or the mind of the Spirit as the Bible puts it. And so they make efforts to contact spirit guides through those who are mediums or by learning the techniques of channeling themselves.

All of these individuals neglect a profound teaching of the Bible! It is the teaching that human beings are creatures of the God. The Bible says He is "the Lord our maker" (Psalm 95:6). "It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves" (Psalm 100:3). But when this truth is neglected, people actually think they can tap into the ultimate source of knowledge and be like God. But again, the Bible says, "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, it is too high, I cannot attain to it" (Psalm 139:6).

On the other hand, the Bible does speak about "The mind set on the Spirit" (Romans 8:6). Literally the text means "the mind of the Spirit." But the word "mind" refers to the attitude toward life which a person has. The apostle Paul uses the same word when he exhorts, "Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 2:5). And so having the "the mind of the Spirit" does not refer to being elevated to a status of a god. Rather, "the mind of the Spirit" is an attitude about life guided by the Spirit of the personal God of the Bible. The wonderful promise is, "The mindset of the Spirit is life and peace" (Romans 8:6).
