Lost and Found Part IIOne of the amber earrings I bought at a Crete market stall had disappeared down the shower drain. I was sure of it. On my hands and knees on the bathroom floor for what felt like hours well, okay, a quarter hour I had searched in and around the shower cubicle and found grout, grime and other foreign objects, but no amber earring. The unmatched half was now destined to spend its life in the Odd Earring Box. Yes, that's right. The Odd Earring Box. Some people have an Odd Socks Drawer due to the phenomenon of the household Black Hole, otherwise known as the washing machine. I have an Odd Earring Box. In it sits a lonely heart earring, abandoned by its partner (the other part had vanished in mysterious circumstances whilst on vacation overseas). My amber earring from Greece would suffer the same lonely fate in the Odd Earring Box. Or so I thought. Two days later, I spotted the shiny silver backing of the missing earring after I trod on it, of course. It lay on a completely different part of the bathroom floor in relation to where I had been looking. Since I was so sure I had lost the amber earring in the shower cubicle, I had focused the bulk of my efforts there. I guess it's obvious to say that you're not going to find something if you look for it in the wrong place, but it's funny how often in life we fall into this very trap. We search for love in all the wrong places. We try to find lasting security in our finances, or seek out our significance based upon what others think of us. My dad, for instance, came from a background of poverty and a broken home. Determined to succeed in life, he climbed the corporate ladder to the top only to ask himself, "What now?" There's nothing wrong with hard work and success. For my dad though, the path he pursued which he thought would lead him to what he was searching for, still left his deepest needs unmet. Those deep needs of our hearts truly can be met, however. Like the saga of the missing earring, we just have to stop looking in the wrong place and start searching in the right place in God. God promises us that if we turn to Him and stop looking elsewhere, He will satisfy even the hungriest heart and deepest need. "... But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing." Psalm 34:10
