A Parable of Three TreesI heard a fellow speak the other night about his trials in life. He'd not been raised in a spiritual household, but as a child, he'd wondered and thought about God. One day, he was sitting in his back yard on a large boulder which was backed up by three trees. As he pondered in his young mind over the concept of God, he decided it would be best if he asked God to show Himself by making the boulder move. Not much, you know, just even a little shudder. Well, of course, the boulder didn't move, and my friend decided his experience with spirituality was over. During the following years, my friend's life fell apart, with severe alcoholism, and he found himself destitute in mind and body. He couldn't keep a job and three marriages failed. At one critical time, for the first time, he faced himself with brutal honesty. In that period, he came to find his soul and his God. This was seven years ago, and he continues in his found ways, being serene in his own skin. A couple of years ago, he was at his parents home; the house in which he grew up. He was there to mow the lawn, and as he looked at the back yard, he noticed the boulder again. The trees and their roots had grown in the interval years, and as they'd done so, the roots had forced the boulder upwards, moving it significantly. He stood in awe at the significance of this, and the symbolism of the three trees. Thy will, O Lord, not mine, be done.
