The Votive Candle

"People of all nations, celebrate God! All colors and races, give hearty praise!" Romans 5:11 (the Message)

Several years ago my daughter gave me a set of three beautiful votive candles. They have been placed in several different areas of our home, but really not utilized. Last month I moved them next to our garden tub. As I relaxed in the tub one night, I decided to light the candles.

Each votive was composed of red, green, yellow and purple pieces of glass. They were pretty to look at, even unlit. Then I illuminated the candles, and watched the flame flicker through the different colors of the glass votive. It was an exquisite sight. This reminded me of God's children, born into different races, with different skin colors, but pretty when united in love. When the light of Jesus shines through us, we can be just as extra beautiful as the lit votive. Matthew 5:16 says, "let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." Jesus truly is that light within us.

I am sure it would have been a pretty sight with just one color of glass. But with the different colors, united and joined in a circle, it was much more than just pretty; it was outstanding! In the Bible, in Psalm 133 : 1, King David wrote, "how good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity." I pray that all of God's children will unite in complete harmony someday, unbroken as a circle, reflecting the radiant light of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. May each of us strive toward this goal, as 2006 unfolds for us.
