Finger Controller

My 12-year-old had to get a finger stick at the doctor's office today. Don't you hate those? Poor Daniel. He told me later he thought the needle was going to come all the way through the other side of his finger.

He got really nervous when the nurse couldn't seem to get enough blood from the first stick. We were all thinking she might have to go after another finger. But that determined nurse kept squeezing his finger for all it was worth. She all but had him in a headlock. She finally managed to wring out enough for his blood test. Whew!

I told Daniel during the finger milking that we could drive through the fast food restaurant of his choice once we wrapped up the doctor's office visit. After all, every kid who has to have a finger prick deserves a mercy burger, right?

After the nurse left the room, I asked him where he'd like to go for lunch. He said, "I haven't had a chance to think about it yet. I was too busy trying to bleed."

He's so funny.

We all get a little funny on the spiritual side, too. We try to control things that are totally out of our control. It's about as futile as trying to bleed.

There's only One who truly controls everything. In Ephesians 1:19-22, Paul prays that we'll understand the mighty, risen, all-controlling One.

"I pray that you will begin to understand the incredible greatness of his power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God's right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else in this world or in the world to come. And God has put all things under the authority of Christ, and he gave him this authority for the benefit of the church." (NLT)
All the control in the universe is safely where it should be in Christ. Paul tells us it's for our benefit. It really is good for us when we understand that he is in control and we quit trying to run things on our own.

Praise the Lord who so mightily controls the stars and planets, land and seas- our very hearts and each heart's every beat. That does include, by the way, every drop of blood those hearts are pumping.
