Unemployed

"Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised." Job 1:21 NIV

The words struck like a physical blow. I watched my young boss stretch back in his chair and clasp both hands behind his head. "I'm sorry, but your job is being terminated."

The job I had alternately loved and hated for five years was gone in a single corporate swipe. I believed God had placed me in the position. Many times this knowledge carried me through difficult days. My job was comfortable. I had expected to remain there until retirement. At fifty-one, I felt too old to start over. Why would God suddenly change His mind and the direction of my life?

Job must have felt the same way. To hear of family members being carried off by marauders, to have his livestock stolen and his children killed in a freak accident might have shaken his faith in a loving, merciful God. But somehow Job realized that whether or not things go smoothly in our lives, God is worthy of our confidence and praise. Read Job 42:12-16 to see how God rewarded Job for trusting Him.

Like Job, I choose to believe. I ask God to show me the next step.
