Absorbed

The woman walked to her car at the end of another long day at the office. The too-familiar thought began to creep into her mind just as it did every day at this time. She drove the short distance to her home. As she turned onto her street, she wondered if she would spend another night alone as she so often did. But she was determined that she would be able to ignore it once again.

Sadly, many men and women, although married, come home to such emptiness at the end of the day. It is hard to remember that once we get married, we are not just living for ourselves anymore. In taking the vows of marriage, we have promised to turn our focus more to serving our spouse rather than serving our own interests.

Serving another person is such a tough concept for the human race to comprehend. There have been few times in my life, outside of reading the bible or spending time with God, when any training or teaching has centered on helping me be a better servant to others or my spouse. Never in the history of man have we been farther from knowing how to serve others.

The greatest example of a servant was Christ. He came into the world for the sole purpose of giving up His life, and through that, in bringing glory to God. There was not a selfish moment in His life; instead he was thinking constantly of our best interests and making sure His every movement included us. He left that example and parallel for us so that we would know how to serve others; particularly our spouses.

In Ephesians 5:25, Paul wrote, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." There are no exceptions in God's teachings regarding how husbands and wives should serve each other. He gave us the perfect example in Jesus' love for us.
