Global Positioning

My family and I recently returned from vacation to Virginia. None of us had ever been to Virginia before so it was a bit of a foreign land to us. It was strange to drive toward the ocean while driving east! Now, being a male, I know there is some sort of "perception" out there about asking for directions. I chose this year to outdo that perception and not get lost in the first place. I brought along a little companion to ensure that I would be able to live up to my goal. I purchased a software program for my lap top computer that includes a Global Positioning System (GPS). I was able to plug in the address of the airport and our destination here at home prior to leaving, turn on the computer once we got into our rental car and, just like that, I was located on the map. As I traveled toward our destination I'll admit that I made a wrong turn or two (but no more). No sweat; all we had to do was click "recalculate from here" and the computer told me how to get back on track. It was amazing as we rolled up in front of our destination.

As I navigated around, I began to think about how I navigate through life. I will be the first to admit that I get myself all turned around often as I travel the highways and byways of life. I make decisions daily that get me off course and headed into a neighborhood that is dangerous, if not deadly. I see a road that looks fun and in the end it leads to regret, knowing that I've strayed off the path that was marked out for me. I got to thinking about how important it is for me to keep my focus on my spiritual GPS, which is God's word. Without that road map for my life, I'm doomed. God's word as stated in Psalm 119:105 is "a lamp to my feet and a light to my path". 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says: "All Scripture is Godbreathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work". If I don't have God's word in my life I'm left to my own wisdom to get through life. Proverbs 5:21-23 says: "For a man's ways are in full view of the LORD, And he examines all his paths. The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast. He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly."

It is obvious that without the GPS of God's word in my life there is not much hope. That small GPS receiver on my dash board made me very thankful for the word of God and it's ability to help me navigate life. I am thankful that when I get off track I can recalculate my position based on repentance and forgiveness and be set on the right path once again.
