The Hands Of The Living God - Message #259

When our middle daughter was born, I was the first one to get to hold her, after the doctor and nurses. There she was, in my hands, totally dependent upon me and her mother for her care and for her food. Her little hands would some day hold her younger sister. But for now, I held her, in my hands.

This reminds me that I'm totally dependent upon God for life and health. Oh sure, I need to work to earn a living. And I do have the responsibility to care for my own health and the health of my family. But ultimately, I am in the hands of God. There is no better place to be.

As with everything, there is a down side. The Bible reminds us, "It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Hebrews 12:31). This is true if you are on God's wrong side. It's just like when children rebel against their parents and get on their wrong side. It can be mighty uncomfortable. God's punishments are infinitely worse because rebellion against Him is infinitely more terrible.

On the other hand, God's love can be and is infinitely more lovely, satisfying and fulfilling for those who are on God's right side through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ died to pay for the sin and rebellion of people like us. We who are on God's right side through faith in Jesus Christ, are forever in the hands of this gracious, merciful and loving God. Jesus put it this way, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand" (John 10:27-28). Greater security could not be found.
