Cremation Or Burial #182

Why do I favor Christian burial? My answer has to do with the importance of the body. What are human bodies? When people die, do their bodies just become empty containers? Can you therefore treat them as such? No! Dead human bodies are not like empty beer cans discarded by the road or thrown in the trash.

Those who want to put their bodies through the fire often miss this point. They think the body is of no further use. They reduce it to ashes and scatter it "wherever." There is another important perspective! It says death does not end it all. Death is simply the separation of body and spirit. This is how the Bible describes it. "And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, 'Father, into your hands I commit My spirit.' And having said this, He breathed His last" (Luke 23:46).

After death, we bury the body. The symbolism is hope, the hope of the resurrection. The Bible likens burial and resurrection to planting a seed. "So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown a perishable body, it is raised an imperishable body" (1 Corinthians 15:42). Burial testifies to our faith and hope. The testimony of cremation is just the opposite. It is really for those "having no hope and without God in the world" (Ephesians 2:12).
