Tsunami
It was a beautiful morning on the resort island of Phuket in southern Thailand. Many people were already outside enjoying the beauty when suddenly, out of nowhere, came a thunderous roar. Looking up, a young mother, who had been strolling along the beach with her two young sons, saw a towering tsunami wave rolling directly toward them. She grabbed the boys and tried in vain to run to safety. The wave was so powerful that it looked as if they could not possibly survive, especially since she was trying to hold onto both of her sons. "Fighting to stay above the surging waters, she had to choose which one would have to take his chances in the swirling, debris-strewn torrent," ABC News reported. "I knew I had to let go of one of them and I just thought I'd better let go of the one that's the oldest," said the mother. Forced to make an agonizing decision, she held the younger, lighter one in her arms and let go of the older boy. After some time, the mother and the smaller child reached a place of safety. It was not until hours had passed that she learned her older son had miraculously been found safe.
When I heard this story, I was reminded of the times when huge waves of trouble come into our lives. They threaten to take us under; sometimes we are confident that they will. Jesus has promised that if we belong to Him, He will never let go of us. Here's what He says in John 10:27-29: "My sheep recognize My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them away from Me, for my Father has given them to Me, and He is more powerful than anyone else. So no one can take them from Me." (New Living Translation) Notice that He did not promise we would have no difficulties or heartache, but rather His promise has to do with spiritual and eternal safe keeping. And when we do go through trials, His loving arms will be around us giving us strength, peace, and hope; we can trust Him and rest in Him.
