Music Everywhere

"With gratitude in your heart sing psalms, hymns and songs to God." Colossians 3:16The leaves rustled on the trees as the wind gently blew. The sound was music to my ears, reminding me that the invisible wind can cause an audible occurrence. The wind chimes on my porch jingled a tune, reminding me of something that I told my children when they went away to college. "Remember, when you hear the wind chimes that I placed outside your dorm room: Jesus loves you."

There is music in scenery and music in chirping birds; yes, music invades our life from many angles. It has been mentioned in the Bible from Genesis 4 (Jubal being the father of all musicians) through the New Testament. In Exodus, we are told that Miriam and other women sang and danced to praise God. The ark of the covenant was accompanied by trumpeters. We learn in Numbers and the power of God was used through trumpets as the walls of Jericho fell to their sound. King David was a lover of music, and during his reign, music in worship became more organized and refined. Instruments and voices were to be used by all to praise the Lord (Psalm 150). A rich musical heritage in the Old Testament preludes the exposition of music in the New Testament. Jesus himself sang a hymn with the disciples. (Matthew 26:30) I remember when I saw this depicted during the Atlanta Passion Play, how it touched my heart! Paul and Silas sang in jail. (Acts 16:25) Can you imagine that? We are told to sing to the Lord responding to what He has done in our lives (Colossians 3:16). It is evident that music was created by God and He has given us the opportunity to return it to Him in praise, the prelude to true worship.

Lively praise choruses and worship songs based on scripture are popular today, as well as traditional hymns that I learned as a child. I have heard musical instruments from the violin to the drums, singing their praises to the Lord.

Music, I believe, is a wonderful avenue through which to usher in the presence of God in our lives. It is when His presence enters our lives that our hearts can be transformed, and the spirit, soul and body can be healed. It is truly the usher which invites us into a special place shared between us and the Lord. May you experience this delight in your life search and every day!
