Violence: Its Cause #276

A cover of U.S. News reads, 'When Killers Come to Class.' This cover story is about violence in schools. This is nothing new. It's a big issue. As this article says, "School violence is on the rise - and not just in inner cities. Behind it lies a chilling shift in adolescent attitudes: a sharp drop in respect for life." But why do students have increasingly less respect for life and death? This has not happened over night. It has been a gradual process. Since 1960 violent crime in the United States has increased over 500 percent.

At the same time, there has been a corresponding decline in our emphasis upon God. When I was in elementary school, the teacher began each day with a short reading from the Bible and a word of prayer. Bible reading has been eliminated from schools. Prayer has been eliminated from schools. The message sent to children is simple; you can get along just fine without God. You don't need Him. Then the Ten Commandments were taken out of schoolrooms. Children are no longer faced with God's standards for living. Commandments from God like 'You shall not murder' have been outlawed. At the same time, free condoms are readily available and so-called 'safe sex' is promoted. The results have been astounding. Today, over one quarter of births in America occur outside of marriage. I know a high school where being pregnant is considered the in thing. Abortion is the answer of choice.

We teach children to be careless about bringing life into the world. We teach them it's no big thing to terminate life in the womb. So in the eyes of many young people, life is cheap. When you take God out of the picture, there is no eternal significance to life and death.
