The Dangers of Gossip

Like many families who live states apart, mine is no different. My siblings, parents and I, however, generally do not allow space to keep us apart in mind and heart Phone calls and mail are just a few of the ways we can keep in touch with loved ones.

Communicating with family and friends is well and fine, but what happens when conversation drifts more into the realm of needless gossip and he said/she said rather than the sharing of loving good tidings? For example, thoughtless words spoken by Aunt Mary might be passed on to cousin Nick, which then causes feelings to be hurt.

The same goes for words and situations taken out of context, and not fully understood, and before you know it, a good deed has been interpreted into something negative. Upon seeing the damaging effect of second-hand information in my own family, I have come to the conclusion that it is healthier and more in keeping with God's word to not be tale-bearers. This, of course, includes not giving entrance to second-hand tales, otherwise known as gossip. The way I see it, if someone wants me to know something, they will tell me directly, and I can be spared possible distortions of fact which have the potential to cause pain and injury.

Our communication should be for good, and not to sow seeds of discord.

So too, is there a more important "good news," the peace and joy of God's gift of salvation to those who call upon His name in repentance.

Today, won't you consider sweetening your speech, and inviting love into your heart?
