Mixing Up the Pronouns

"At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord." Philippians 2:10-11
At two and a half years, Ryan is Mr. Independence. An adorable pint-sized blue eyed cutie, he is definitely feeling his 2 year old oats. Frequently his mom hears him say, "My do it myself!"When she is helping dress him, he might spout, "Him put him socks on him feet himself!" His own rendition of a song on TV, sung at the top of his little lungs, is "Bob the Builder, can him fix it? Yes! Him can!"

His PopPop and I have kiddingly adopted the speech pattern, because it reminds us of him, trying to be all grown up. We think it is just the cutest thing. All too soon he will quit mixing up the pronouns and get them in the right order.

Pronouns can be an indication of who's in charge. Or, who thinks he or she is in charge. Too often a rebellious spirit towards God invades my speech. I hear myself saying misplaced pronouns along these lines: "I can do it !" instead of, "He can do it". Or, "I want" rather than, "He wants".

In all twelve step programs, there are lots of pronouns, in the right order. A tiny paraphrase of the first three steps are: 1)I can't. 2)He can. 3)I think I'll let Him.

Today I will ask the Holy Spirit to adjust my thoughts and speech so that I do not mix up the important pronouns.
