My Servant Will Justify Many #367

Christianity majors in two things, what we are to believe concerning God and the duty God expects of humankind. These are the big issues. They are both quite important as we reckon with our relationship with God. First of all, every human being comes into this world at odds with God. There is a propensity in our hearts to rebel against God, ignore His words given in the Bible and live pleasure driven lives at the expense of others. We see this readily in our hedonistic overly stimulated society. Now contrary to popular belief, God is not in the business of removing every source of pleasure in life. Actually, God's desire is to replace the ephemeral short-lived pleasure of the world with more substantial, lasting delight found in him.

To bring this about, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. Christ died to pay the penalty due to people like you and me for our rebellion, self-centeredness and greed. When we trust in the sacrifice of Christ, we are right with God. The Bible calls this justification. We go through life trying to justify our mistakes, justify our positions on various issues and justify our greed and intolerance. We even try to justify ourselves to God. But that won't wash. We need Jesus Christ to step in and represent us before the Father. We need Jesus Christ to say to God, "Father, I died for this lonely soul. Take him, take her, into your heaven." We don't justify ourselves before God. Jesus Christ does it for us. Rather than always trying to justify ourselves, we need to trust Jesus Christ.
