A Lady Named Alice

Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should goShe had to move from her spacious home, her friendly neighborhood, her nearby church and all that was familiar to her when her husband died.It was time to live in a high rise apt. for the elderly- independent living area. The move was difficult for her, but she asked God to help her in this trying time. What would she do without her garden to tend, neighbors to talk to, the activities at the church and all else that was familiar to her? Please, Lord, she said, give me a passion for something.   On the other side of the building were the accommodations for those who needed assisted living. Their living quarters consisted of a bedroom and a bathroom. Their meals were served to them, pills distributed promptly, clothes laundered , personal needs tended to and the area kept clean and neat. What was missing was interaction with people -conversations and laughter did not permeate the halls of the assisted living area.

One day Alice walked from one side of the building to the other, to visit a friend who went to assisted living after a stroke. She became aware of the need there- a touch of a hand, someone to be a good listener, someone who cared about the individual. She asked God,"Is this the place you want me to serve, Lord?" It seems His answer was yes, for before long her visits turned into full time ministry for those folks. She ate meals with them, wrote notes for them, discussed family photos with them, pray with them, and most of all- listened to them. She was a friend to each God put in her path.

Isn’t it wonderful that God can use us- no matter our age, race, color or creed. His will use our hands, feet and hearts to serve others - if only we would ask Him.
