The Promise of the Resurrection #166

Easter is upon us. Candy rabbits and baskets of chocolate eggs can be found everywhere. The annual Easter egg hunts are planned. It's all a remembrance of spring with a capital "S". Easter is the name of the ancient Teutonic Goddess of Springtime. It's amazing how our sophisticated secular society clings to ancient forms of worship. At the same time, we dispose of traditional Christian values and worship. Does God expect us to celebrate the annual visitation of the Goddess of Springtime? Not really. We should remember the resurrection of Jesus Christ. After all, the central holiday of the Christian church is the celebration of Christ's resurrection. So God would have us remember not only Christ's death on the cross but also the fact He rose again from the dead. Of course, although we willingly glorify the Goddess of Springtime, we are much too sophisticated to believe in the resurrection of the dead. But as the apostle Paul said, "Why is it considered incredible among you if God does raise the dead?" (Acts 26:8). The whole point is, we don't believe in this God of the Bible. We think we can handle life on our own. We push God aside. Then we replace the God of the Bible with secular holidays based on pagan religions. It doesn't make much sense, except to say, we are all religious and have questions. Questions like: Why believe in God? What has gone wrong with the world? Is there an answer to suffering? Can religion really help?
