This Life Is Not The Main Event#266
Labor Day was set aside to honor the concept of work and to honor workers. But now it is a holiday used to forget our labor. Why?Well, why do we work? We work to make more money. And we work hard. But we work hard to make money in order to be able to play hard. We play hard in order to forget our work. It is a vicious circle. But we are in this strange, wild, and unruly circle because of our world view. We really believe this life is the main event. When we die, we die. That's it. That's all there is. So if we fail to take advantage of all this life has to offer, we are bound to miss out. This is why we no longer believe in delayed gratification. To delay may mean missing the boat. We don't want to miss anything. The Old Testament patriarchs had a different view of life. Listen to what the Bible says about Abraham. "By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out not knowing where he was going for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God" (Hebrews 11:8 & 10). Abraham was a wealthy man. He had all a fellow could ask for as far as material blessings are concerned. But Abraham didn't put all of his eggs into one basket. Abraham sought for something far better than worldly pleasure and happiness. Abraham sought for the city of God. He went on a journey looking for the mansions of heaven built by Jesus Christ. He did this because he knew this life is not the main event. He realized the life to come is full of indescribable glory and ineffable bliss. This world view lent perspective to all the rest of his life.
