Jesus Christ, Lord of Nations#308
When I was a kid, I remember going to a friend's house to enjoy some fireworks. It was a real blast,in more ways than one. I knew what July fourth was all about. It commemorated the signing of the Declaration of Independence. But I gave it little thought. I gave even less thought to God who actually brought this country into being. Yes, God. You know who He is. Not everyone acknowledges Him. But you know who He is. He is the creator of the universe and everything in it. "The heavens are declaring the glory of God, and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands" (Psalm 19:1). So, God is revealing Himself to you through His creations. As a result, you know Him, even if you reject Him. Listen to this: "For since the creation of the world, His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made" (Romans 1:20). You see, God's eternal power and divine nature are being revealed to you through every rock and hill, every mountain and stream, every star and planet, and in all the expanse of outer space and inner space. It is this same God who rules and overrules in our world. It is this same God who brought the United States of America into being. "It is He who changes times and epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings" (Daniel 2:21). So when the Fourth of July rolls around, it is not only time for fireworks. It is time to give thanks to God for bringing this country into being. It is time to thank God for giving us a place in it.
