WHO IS YOUR HERO?

Is your hero an athlete who kicks, hits, carries, or throws a ball well? Or an actor who is envied for his good looks and great talent? Or is it a successful business person who invested well and grew rich?My heroes are neither actors, athletes, or millionaires. They are ordinary people like the veterans who defended our nation in times of war small town folks who rally to help their neighbors. One of my most beloved heroes is my dad. He's the kindest, most thoughtful, generous, honest, and fun person I know. And he's cute too! That runs in our family.

Some of my heroes are fragile, gray-haired grandmothers who spend many hours at a computer keyboard sending encouragement and love to sick children via email. And some of my favorite heroes are gentle, loving mothers in cancer wards who rock their dying children as they cling to hope and pray for miracles.

Many of our nation's greatest heroes arose from the smoking ashes of the Trade Center towers last September. And many heroes never did emerge from that smoldering rubble.

What makes a person a hero? Not super-human strength or uncommon abilities. They are ordinary people who express extra-ordinary, self-sacrificing love. They give everything they've got to save others.

I'm proud of the many unselfish, American heroes our country has brought forth. Yet, they are only human; and therefore, they are not always able to save.

On my kitchen wall hangs a plaque with the words of President George Bush: "We will not tire. We will not falter. We will not fail." It's an admirable sentiment; but, sadly, human heroes do tire and falter. Imperfect humans have frailties and limitations; and sometimes they falter. Yes, many times, in spite of great effort and the best intentions, they even fail us.

There is only one hero who can never fail. He can always rescue. He too has extra-ordinary, self-sacrificing love. His name is Jesus. He gave all that he could give in order to save those he loved - YOU and ME!

"At just the right time, when we were powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates His love for us in this: While we were sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:6-7)

He is the greatest hero of all time.
