Discipleship and the Church#073
You cannot be a student if you do not attend school. Being a student and attending school go hand in hand.The same thing applies if you are really going to be a Christian, a disciple of Christ. You must enroll in the school of Christ. And the school of Christ is the church. For many people, joining a church or attending worship services is a matter of indifference. The only objective for spending an hour at a worship service is to get a spiritual shot in the arm. But discipleship involves a lot more. It involves teaching. It involves entering the church to receive teaching. Christ commanded, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you" (Matthew 28:19-20). In other words, becoming a disciple involves being baptized, because baptism is an ordinance of the church. When you are baptized, you become a part of the church. In fact, you become a member of a local church. In that church you are to be taught to observe or do all that Christ commanded. You see, the church is a school. It's not a high blown academic institution. It's a vocational school. To be sure, there is book learning. The book is the Bible, and you are taught the Bible from cover to cover. You are taught to live by the Bible. Your practical work faces you every day in all that you do. Yes, the church is the school of Christ. Hebrews 10:24-25 applies to the church, "Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some."
