Heaven and Hell?#223He loves everyone just the way they are no matter what they do or how they live. We can afford to be indifferent to such a god. But what about the God of the Bible? Let me tell you a story. I often go to the chapel services at a local college. The students are frequently apathetic. They slouch down in their seats and talk to each other or doze off to sleep. But one chapel period, the preacher had everyone's attention. He spoke about heaven and hell. He presented the God of the Bible as the God who does not allow us to go unpunished. And he presented Jesus Christ as the only Savior from the torments of hell. He explained that Christ suffered the torments of hell on the cross to pay for the sins of people like those students. And he warned students and faculty alike that a rejection of Jesus Christ would be disastrous, eternally. And that speaker backed up what he said from the Bible. Students and faculty were furious. They hated the message and they hated the speaker. The thing is, if we dare present the God of the Bible as He really is, people actually do hate Him. If they could get their hands on Him, they would kill Him. That's exactly what happened two thousand years ago when God "became flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:14). You see, Christ's own people cried out, "Let Him be crucified" (Matthew 27:23). How about you?
