Cleansing PowerCertainly, it is important to keep ourselves clean, but soap and water only work on the outside of our bodies. Isn't it important that we keep ourselves clean inside, too? Of course it is, but we tend not to think of that very often. We need to think of it more often than we do, because the real measure of a man depends on what he is on the inside, not on what you see on the outside. We can look awfully good on the outside, but be stained and defiled within by impure or wrong thoughts in our minds, and by pride and self-love in our hearts. These may be well concealed and unseen by others, but it is here that our greatest need to be cleansed lies. But how can we do that? We can't do it, because washing with soap and water, even with a scouring pad, doesn't reach the filth on the inside. So how can we get clean on the inside - that is, spiritually clean? The Bible says that nothing but the blood of Jesus Christ can make us clean spiritually. At first, that is a difficult concept to understand, because we naturally think of blood as something that makes a mess and itself needs to be cleaned up, rather than as a cleansing agent. But stop and think for a moment, what is it that physically cleans our bodies on the inside? It is our blood, which carries the carbon dioxide back to the lungs to be expelled, and then carries fresh oxygen from the lungs back to the rest of our body, in a never-ending cleansing cycle. Also, it is the white blood cells in our blood that attack infection inside our bodies, forming pus to be expelled. So if it is blood which cleanses us physically on the inside of our bodies, doesn't it make sense that we also need blood to cleanse us inside spiritually? Ah, but it must be blood that is spiritually pure and undefiled, and there is none such, save that of our Lord, Jesus Christ. That is why he had to shed his blood and die for us. What a precious gift! And will we not avail ourselves of it? We dare not fail to do so, for therein lies our salvation, and our eternal life. And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he had not first washed before dinner. And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. (Luke 11:38-39) "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me" John 10:27
