Darkness

Daniel 2:22 God knows what lies hidden in darkness, though He Himself is surrounded by light. Our 18 month old grandson has particular sleeping habits. The room is engulfed with the drone of the sound machine, and must be very, very dark. Often I hear him in the morning, giggling and laughing as he turns the pages of his little books and plays with some soft toys in the crib. Darkness still abounds, as the blackout curtains obliterate the light, but he is not afraid. Comfort items are there for him to touch and hear, and that is enough. Lately he has discovered an empty cabinet in our den. He loves to climb in, shut the doors, and be in that ebony little cubby. There may be a familiar toy or two, but I really don’t know what he does in there. I know one thing for sure- he is not afraid of the dark.

Then, why and where, do we grow up and become afraid of the dark? Things are more ominous after darkness falls, and as we walk down a black deserted street, we look over our shoulder often. We make sure all our doors are locked, and turn on the security alarm before going to bed. I have heard that 3 a.m. is the darkest time of our 24 hour cycle, and that is when evil lurks heavy.

Oh, that we would be as this little child, not fearing the darkness. Jesus calls us to come to him as a little child, trusting, believing and unafraid. He gives us the Holy Spirit to comfort and calm us, just as Tanner has his familiar toys in the crib. The Bible tells us "greater is He (Jesus) that is in us than he (satan) who is in the world. That good news means fear of the darkness can be overcome by the power of The Lord. I claim that power, and the divine protection that accompanies it. Won’t you join me?
