WHAT IS HE THINKING?

When a small child dies, a parade of questions run through our mindsA friend's three year old passed away this week. We are all shattered when news like this reaches us. A parade of thoughts race through our minds: QUESTIONS (like "Why MY child?" and "Why NOW?"); FEARS (like "What if I were to lose a loved one too?"); BLAME (anger at God or doctors for not performing a miracle); PITY (for surviving family members); and maybe even GUILT (for surviving ourselves).

We think of all the "what if" scenarios, but do you ever wonder what God is thinking at a time like this? His Word (the Bible) gives us a glimpse into His thoughts. If we could hear Him speak to us, He would probably be saying:

I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL. He's the only God who suffered the loss of a child. He knows how brutal this world is and He's felt grief too. "You are my son whom I love." (Mark 1:11) "All my compassion is aroused." (Hosea 11:8) "His spirit was grieved." (Isaiah 63:10) "You oh God do see trouble and grief." (Psalm 10:14) "He was a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering . . . He carried our sorrows." (Isaiah 53:3)

I LOVE YOU. "I have loved you with an everlasting love." (Jeremiah 31:3) "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son." (John 3:16)

I WANT TO BLESS YOU. "He did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all - Will he not also graciously give us all things?" (Romans 8:32)

I AM WITH YOU. "The Lord your God goes with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you." (Deuteronomy 31:6) "I am with you always." (Matthew 28:20) "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you." (Isaiah 43:2)

PAIN IS PART OF LIFE "In this world, you will have trouble," (John 16:33a)

WHAT IS GOD THINKING?

BUT TAKE HEART "But be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world." (John 16:33b)

NOTHING BAD IN THIS WORLD CAN SEPARATE US. "Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor demons . . . nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God."

I WANT YOU TO LEAN ON ME "Come to me you who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

I CAN GIVE YOU PEACE. "My peace I give to you . . . Do not be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:28)

I CAN MAKE YOU STRONG. "My strength is made perfect in (your) weakness." (2 Corinthians 12:9)

I CAN BRING GOOD EVEN FROM TRAGEDY. "In all things, God works for the good of those who love Him." (Romans 8:28)

ULTIMATELY, NOTHING (NOT EVEN DEATH) CAN HURT YOU BECAUSE, THROUGH MY SON, YOU HAVE THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE. "Death where is your victory . . . Where is your sting? Death has been swallowed up in victory." (1 Corinthians 15:55)

With the "King of Kings" in our lives, we can overcome struggles in this life and live forever with Him in his eternal kingdom where pain, suffering, tears and death will no longer exist.

Life on earth may still be hard - even with Him by our sides - but it will definitely be more purposeful with Him than without Him. And more fulfilling, rewarding and peaceful. Only He can provide the perfect peace that our hearts long for when we encounter suffering.

His love is with us and through anything and can overcome any situation, burden, or grief -- no matter how great.

Unlike other religions, the very heart of Christianity revolves around a tragic and unjust death. The best man who ever lived (Jesus) had to suffer, so we can't expect a life free of pain and sorrow; but God brings life and good out of the tragedy of Jesus' death. He can do the same with our suffering too!
