Sale OnBut my shopping venture of a few weeks ago didn't go that way. I was walking by the ladies' clothing section when a cute sweater vest caught my eye. It was wonderfully bright and perky with some subtle flowers here and there. I didn't really need another sweater vest, you understand, but I WANTED it. I stood studying it for a few minutes--just to truly appreciate it. Then came the clincher. Those three little words that all women long to hear: On Sale Now! It was sort of like I was walking along, minding my own business, when WHAM! This lovely but vicious sweater vest attacked me and forced itself into my hands. Next thing I knew, the sweater had made it past the store laps, through the cashier and I was wearing it. As I read Psalm 1 the next day, it occurred to me that it's pretty much the same with sin. "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night." And verse six says: "For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish." At first, we're just passing by, walking past the ungodly. Maybe we're catching a glimpse of something on t.v. or hearing something inappropriate at the office. Or maybe it's a thought that flies into our minds unexpectedly. Suddenly we find ourselves standingand listening to that thought or that counsel--sort of like people stop to just peek at a train wreck. The next thing we know, the sin is ours. We're sitting in the middle of it--wearing it, if you will. We may think we were the victims of an attack, but we've actually made achoice to buy into the sin and "put it on." As for the sweater vest, I proudly put it on the next day. Daniel, my five-year-old, aid, "Mom! I like your new vest!" I smiled one of those "I'm so pleased with myself" smiles as he went on to share what I'm sure he considered the ultimate compliment: "Mom, you look just like the ladies who work at KMart!" I looked down at my bright vest. He was right. The moral: Keep on walking. Keep your face in the Word and you won't find yourself sitting in the middle of the perishing sinners. And if you'd like a brightly colored sweater vest, keep me in mind. I'm having a blue light special in the sweater section of mycloset.
