A Storm for the Wise

The storm was fierce and everyone was tense. What would become of them? They were out on the sea, with no land in sight, afraid and losing faith. The ship was tossed back and forth with the wind and the waves.

"Captain, what are we going to do?" cried one of the sailors. "The water is filling up the ship! If we don't do something, we will sink!"

They were utterly helpless. "Why did we come out here anyway? We should have known that this was going to happen," said another.

"Don't feel like that. We all came out here with the feeling that we were going to defend our country and feel better about life. How did we know? Regardless of what happens, we came in good faith, and we are doing what we promised to do. That's really all that matters," said another.

The cry of another sailor rang out, "I don't want to die! I'm too young! I have a family! What will become of them if I die out here in the ocean! They might not ever find us!"

He is consoled by the voice of another sailor, "Everybody just calm down. You can't do anything about something that is totally out of your control. Try to think about what we can do here and now to help our own situation. Let everything else take care of itself."

"Think of it this way; we have each other now, right here. This could be our last time together, but we really don't know that. So let's make sure we are as brave, strong and courageous as when we left the shore to start this voyage. Do your best to do the best job you can do right now. We can't predict anything, and the past is gone. Let's do this! If we see tomorrow, it's a good thing, but if we don't, it's still a good thing, because we left our best here where it could do the most good.
