Terrifying Yet Comforting #123

We need eternal perspective on life more than anything else. The realities of heaven and hell ought to loom large in our thinking. Death does not end it all. In fact, we pass from this life into eternal bliss or eternal perdition. Such thinking may leave us cold. It should also reign in questionable and evil conduct.

Walk through a cemetery. You’ll see the graves of many people who passed from this life without trusting in the salvation of Jesus Christ. The final judgment will tell all. "If anyone’s name was not written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire" (Revelation 20:15). Think of it. Not everyone enters heaven. Many people reject God and His salvation. Most of them don’t realize the perilous road they are traveling. The pleasures of sin and evil seem a good thing for now. The pleasure will not last forever. "It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Hebrews 10:31).

Here’s the other side. To avoid judgment and look forward to the bliss of heaven is wonderful comfort. We do not receive this promise of comfort because we are special. We must trust in Christ’s sacrifice on the cross to cover our moral faults and ethical misconduct. We must ask for and receive God’s forgiveness.
