A Piercing Prophecy #243
Many prophecies from the Old Testament of the Bible came about when Christ was on this earth. Several of them have to do with His death and resurrection. For example,Zechariah 12:10says, They will look on Me whom they have pierced. The apostle John tells us these words were fulfilled when Christ was crucified. After His death, while He was still on the cross, soldiers came to check on Jesus and those condemned with Him. They broke the legs of those crucified with Jesus to increase their agony and speed their death. But Jesus was already dead. The soldiers did not break His legs. There was no need. Then, one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear and immediately there came out blood and water (John 19:34). This was proof Jesus was dead. The Gospel of John says, These things came to pass, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Not a bone of Him shall be broken. And another Scripture says, They shall look on Him whom they pierced (John 19:36-37).Zechariah 12:10was perfectly and completely fulfilled.Did you know those soldiers epitomize people like you and me? Our sins put Christ on the cross. In a real sense, we are the ones who pierced Jesus. We are like those soldiers. We too look upon the One whom we have pierced.
