Fragile Kingdoms

Job 8:14-15What he trusts in is fragile; what he relies on is a spider's web. He leans on his web, but it gives way, He clings to it, but it does not hold.A spider built his kingdom in my flowerbed one night last week. When I looked out my kitchen window, the early morning sun was illuminating his handiwork as its early rays outlined the dew diamonds captured in the web. One side of the web was anchored to the branches of a bush, but from where I stood, not even a dew diamond was visible marking the other borders. What a feat of architecture this spider had performed. I marveled at the beauty in the spider's web. I could see the spider in the center, resting from his night of spinning, satisfied that he had created his kingdom.

Job tells us that what he trusts in is fragile - he leans on his web, but it gives way- he clings to it, but it does not hold. When the sun rose higher in the sky and the dew diamonds evaporated, the beauty of the web was gone. I could not leave the spider's web in my flowerbed, for it would catch all types of trash if left there. Later during the day, I went out and removed it.Do we labor to build kingdoms that are fragile, that will give way when we lean on them? Or do we build our kingdom on the solid foundation of Christ? Kingdoms build on beauty fades. Athletes build kingdoms on disciplined bodies. A damaged muscle or broken bone can shatter their career. Businessmen build on the strength of the stock market. It crashes. Politicians sacrifice all for a term in public office; sometimes losing everything. The list goes on and on.

Suggested Prayer:"Lord, help us to build kingdoms that are solid so that when we lean on the borders, they will not collapse but endure the pressures of time. Teach us that beauty is fleeting, but your wisdom endures forever. Amen"
