Falling Leaves II, Part Seven

Editor's note:This week we are running the serial story, Falling Leaves II. If you missed Part One, you can find it here:http://www.DailyWisdom.com/2001/11/12/

It is the next day. Our group is traveling in three jeeps to a sight. Rebecca and Alec are in a jeep alone.

"Oh my ankles are sore today. I'm not used to that much hiking. I'm cursed with these weak ankles," she rubs her feet and ankles. "What is our financier like? Do you think he would allow me to look for the bones of Adam and Eve?"

"He might be persuaded too, if you're nice to him."

"And how do I go about being nice to a person I don't know?"

"What makes you think you don't know him?"

"I don't even know his name."

"Well, I'll introduce you, hello my name is Alec Newman."

"You're the financier? Why did you keep it a secret?"

"It's easier to watch my investment and not have any of the hassles of being the boss. Since my business interests have been so successful I have had more time to play."

"And what business are you in?"

"Real estate mostly and some investments like this. I own several properties in Turkey. So sometimes I come here to stay for a while, visit friends and now this."

"Do you have a collection of gold?"

"Awhile back I was fortunate enough to be involved in the location of an old pirates vessel. It netted me quite a share of coins and some jewelry. I hope to add to it and open a museum. When I heard about this from an old professor friend of mine I decided it might be interesting."

"But you said you were a guide, an historian an expert on the land."

"Well, I am somewhat. I've lived here on and off for quite awhile, I lived a lot of places for a while, my father was a cartographer. You know mapmaker. My brother and me were always flying here and there. I think that's what sparked my interest in treasure seeking. My Dad had all these old maps."

There's a voice over their radio.

"Becky, Alec we're going to pull over here."

They all stop and make camp. Rebecca is in her tent.

"Rebecca, come darling we have our first finds," Thomas calls his daughter. He is holding up a bronze cup and some sort of ring. "I'm sure it's from the Neolithic period."

"Yes, Daddy, probably from 4000 BC I would say," she smiles at her Father. "Were in fertile ground." They all walk out to the table.

"What was this?" Ray asks in his upper crust, ivy- league voice. He picks up the ring. "It looks like a chunky half ring."

"That was more than likely a nose ring," Thomas pears at it.

"The Turkish people have always been big on nose rings," Alec takes it and places it in his nose. "Its part of there mating custom a sign of virility in males, makes the women go wild," he winks at Thomas who smiles.

"Yes, makes them go wildŠOh and a topknot, with a thick gold band, on top of the head," Thomas points to his head and grabs a thatch of hair. "Can't tell you how many times I've found ancient skeletons with a topknot," he snickers facing away from Ray.

"Not only in ancient times but even modern days," Alec now places the ring around a crop of hair on top of his head.

"Modern times too?" Thomas looks at the topknot and turns red, hardly containing a full laugh.

"Oh yes," Alec remains serious.

"That's quite interesting," Ray takes it from Alec and thoroughly regards all its properties. "Topknot, hum.

"Makes the women just act like beasts, my good man," Thomas regains his composure. "Just like beasts."

Rebecca rolls her eyes at the two and goes into her tent. Dennis follows her.

"There's a Masquerade Ball in town," Dennis peeks his head in. "The theme is seventeenth century fantasy. Everyone is going. I was just wondering if you were planning to attend."

"Yes, I am. The hosts are friends of Alec's so we're going to stay at their castle for a few days. You're invited, to stay, if you'd like, unless you want to return to camp."

"No, I'd like to stayŠI still don't have the information you wanted. I just wanted to let you know that I'm still trying. Are you looking for the ark?"

"Becky, I'm going to town to pick up the costumes, want to come?" Alec opens the tent flap.

"No, thanks," she looks at Alec. "Just get me a decent costume. No Dennis, I was just interested." She has the blue box in her hands.

"Oh, I've found some caves in the area," Dennis looks at the box." I have the printouts. If you have a map or anything I could try to coordinate them with my findings. If you like."

"A map? No I don't have a map to anything but, I would like to see that printout."

"I'll get it ready for tomorrow. I could use a ride to town I need to get more computer paper," he glances nervously at Alec.

"Thanks."

"Sure, anytime," Dennis walks out.

"What information was he talking about?"v "Just that he doesn't have those statistics yet."

"Do you really think that would help?"

"Probably not, I don't know. I just know there's something out there that someone wants me to find. I can use all the help I can get. Help from this will come in handy." She holds up the blue box. "The power box, it contains what we put in it right? Then the treasure we seek can be found inside this box. It holds the key."

"Then the treasure will be ours," Alec nods.

Dennis, just outside, hears this last exchange. He knows they are talking about the box Rebecca had in her hand when he was there. He steps over to a secluded spot and pulls out a cell phone, he punches in a number. "Yes, You wanted me to get back with you if I learned of anything interesting. WellŠlisten, ah..."
