Mystery and shades of the unknown litter the streets of Istanbul, like the haunted stares that seem to come from the street hawkers as they call for buyers from their tents of wares. Rebecca and the three men are in the streets of Istanbul. They are walking. Thomas and James are talking up ahead. Rebecca and Alec are behind. It is dark. They are walking through a crowed street fair. "Well, if you want to go that way." Thomas shakes his head at his brother. "I assume it will work." "I have been studying the way of modern man in the city. I don't really think man was any different then. The only difference is electricity. Man has always been the same," James puts his hands in his pockets. "Did you bring me the specimen I ask for?" "Of course, I have two. I found another. This one is in even better condition," the two's voices trail off. "Do you like looking for dusty old bones?" Alec stops to look at a stand of jewelry. Rebecca picks up a pair of earrings. "May I?" Alec asks. "They will be prefect for the Masquerade Ball," Alec goes for his wallet. "No, please. What Masquerade Ball?" "You are going to attend the Ball aren't you? It's a local custom occurring in about a week." "I wasn't aware." "Anyway even if you don't go, a woman as pretty as you should have pretty jewelry. It might be the last time you see such prettiness for a while. After we get started it will be back to the dust." "Unless we find gold. "She holds up the earrings. "Do you really think there is any left that others haven't found?" A group of teenage boys run up to Alec, "Mr. Newman. Alec! Where have you been? We have the map you wanted," they pull on him and take him over to the side then away. A man standing in front of a small table calls Rebecca's attention. "Hello, watch this dear I have something to show you," he has little tiles with letters on them, he lays out G-O-D."God adds to your life and is good, he says." He adds another O in the middle to spell GOOD.Then he removes the G-O-O and leaves the D.He adds more letter tiles to spell. D-E-V-I-L. "The Devil takes from your life and is evil." He removes the D. Rebecca looks at the tiles that now spell evil. She feels lightheaded. "Rebecca," her father calls her from up ahead in the crowd. She looks up then back down at the table. The tiles now spell, DO YOU WANT THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL. "Rebecca," her Father calls. "Yes, yes Father." Just as she turns her head to look towards her Father she hears the tile man say. "The Devil's still in the garden Rebecca, but don't worry so is God." "What?" she turns back to look at him but he is gone. "Rebecca, Come dear don't get lost," her Father pulls her arm. "Where's that man?" she looks around for the man. "What man?" "The man I was just talking to. He was just here. He" "Becky there's lots of men. Come dear." "He knew my name." "That was me calling your name. You need to get some rest. We are working to hard and now I see that we are both too tired after this expedition we will go on a long vacation." Rebecca is lying in her bed, her long hair splayed in tangled disarray across her pale blue pillow, she is dreaming. She sees the Great River Euphrates and a beautiful garden. She sees Adam and Eve eating fruit and drinking out of golden goblets. She hears God say with an echo, "Tend and guard, guard, guard the garden." Then she sees Angels drive them out with swords. Now she sees the garden vacant. She sees an Angel standing guard at the gate. She hears him say, "It's the east gate Rebecca." She sees them take children to the gate. She hears them say, "Look at how beautiful the garden was." She looks in and sees a serpent hanging in the tree. Now she sees the garden in a state of decay. Then she sees Adam and Eve very old and they have died, she sees hundreds of children and grand children mourn there passing. She sees them take their bones and put them in a cave, on the side of a hill, near a tree. Then they look at her and say, "Our parents were real Rebecca. We loved them. Don't let the serpent keep what he stole.
