Falling Leaves II, Part OneEditor's note:Falling Leaves II is a fascinating story with a message. We will be running a portion of this story each day this week. Those of you who read it to the end will not regret it.
There is an older man and his daughter digging in the dirt. The Father speaks with an accent but the daughter seems American. They are archeologists. The man is brushing away final dust from bones hidden for millennia. "What a funny looking amphibian." Thomas raises his glasses higher on his nose to get a better look. I don't think I've ever seen" "And I have another Hominoid," Rebecca dusts off the skull."Look Father. If this guy could talk what mysteries could he tell? He sort of looks like the Neanderthal we found in Germany. Maybe he could tell us why Neanderthal's had such a large head and brain space? Larger than Homo Sapiens. What were they doing with all that brain and such a funny head? "Maybe it was for all their strange magic." He smiles at his daughter. "You know there is evidence to support that their belief system centered on the supernatural." "Yes, I know, how sad. Well, why didn't they conjure up a prettier face for themselves? Look they have no chin." She unrolls the Neanderthal scull from a cloth to compare them. "I don't know. Maybe someone put a curse on them." "Really, that must be the answer," she laughs. " But if they are cursed, then why?" She lifts out the new skull. "Why do we always find these incomplete men, like monkey men? Where is the missing link we look so hard for? Oh Father will we ever find it?" "If anyone should Rebecca, we should. We know there were an evolutionary process and therefore a missing link. Maybe Mother Nature will smile on us and we will be the ones to unravel the secret mystery. I don't want to be a doubting Thomas, but I am beginning to wonder if there is such a thing as a missing link." "We need the magic from one of our Neanderthal men to help us. My, my, such a big brain." "If only they could talk. What would they say? Well, my darling daughter this is the last time we will work in this area. I am glad that we were able to find these two ancient men. Now that I have heard from my brother we have gotten the financing. We will be able to continue our search. We will be going to Istanbul to meet James and the financier We will not have to leave Are you happy?" "Why did you not tell me sooner? This is wonderful news." Rebecca hugs her Father. "The oldest civilization of Cro-Magnon, modern man is here. I know the missing link must be contained here, in the grounds of Turkey and now with more financing..." "I don't know why I didn't tell you. I was saving it for a surprise, you seem so weary lately." Oh Father, I have been so troubled. I almost feel like I want to leave and just go on holiday, but then I feel drawn to this search. I have been having some very strange experiences. I don't know what to make of them. Somehow I feel that someone is showing me things and I don't know why. They are so strange I try to ignore them but I can't." "What kind of strange things do you mean?" "I don't even know what to call it. It was like a vision or something." "Are you saying you have been seeing things? Oh Rebecca, you are just tired. You work too hard. What things do you see?"
