Ordinary Drinking Glass

The flowers in the back and side yards of the house on Portebella Lane werebeautiful. The roses displayed their loveliness in red, melon, yellow andpink. Some were the climbing variety, others were bush types, but they all were so very fragrant. In addition, there were irises, azaleas, gardenias and more.

Although we had put this house on the market to sell, I still went overregularly and cut flowers to take home. How I enjoy snipping the flowers-such a profusion of beauty gathered up in my hands! Last week I had cut a beautiful, full bouquet for myself, and took it home. I didn't have time to get a pretty vase to put them in, so I just pulled an ordinary drinking glass out of the cupboard to use. I thought, "I will change the container later."

Well, later came, and I realized the container wouldn't add anything to the beauty of the profusion of the roses which were spilling over the sides of the glass. The roses held somuch splendor in themselves, the type, shape or material of the container wasreally immaterial. I could have used anything from my most elegant crystal rose bowl to the jelly jar in the back of my cupboard, and the loveliness would have been unaffected. It was not the container that made the difference - it was what was inside!

The same is true for those who know the Lord. Our outward appearance really doesn't make any difference - it is what is IN our container that shows the beauty of Him. If we think about whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8), our bouquet of love will be gorgeous. We will bloom with joy, peace, patience, kindness, love, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self control (Galatians 5:22). I think it is time to stop being so concerned about our container, but consider the flowers of love which are displayed from within. God can make our bouquets beautiful, fragrant and colorful. Just ask for His help!
