Giving BloodAn uncharacteristic calm pervades the atmosphere. People standing in long lines for hours. All wanting to help, all wanting to give something. Feeling helpless, we stand looking at each other in silence, each set of eyes speaking in the language of the soul. Silence, because there are no words to speak. Using the language of the windows of the soul, because human speech is inadequate, each suffering the aftershock from New York and Washington that billowed across the entire country like the wind sends ripples across the Flag. The scene of a huge airplane penetrating our tallest building playing surreal in our minds. The war scene of the Pentagon flashing like a neon sign, two planes from United, two from American, both symbolic words from our free country. We stand amazed that others would give their lives to destroy goodness and decency, saddened when we realize that they were blinded by the truth. They are deceived by the same force that motivated them, the same force that deceives us all. Bloodshed, innocent bloodshed, now we stand trying to replace that blood with our own. They died trying to bring what they destroyed, thinking they would go to glory to a gracious thankful God, so they were willing to give all they had for their cause. Too bad they didn't know the one who had already given all He had for our cause, the one who died for us. Too bad they didn't go to the one that gave his blood, the blood donor of 2000 years ago. In 2001, we give our blood hoping it has power to save, but it won't have the power His blood had, power to wash away sin, cleansing blood, blood which brought freedom. We hope that the ones that gave theirs in the terrorists tragedy won't be shed in vain, we hope others will see into the eyes of the first blood donor of long ago and remember His gift of life, the gift of one that saved limitless masses given for us, given for the U.S. We hope now as the eyes of the world are on us, that they see the strength we have and long to know the God that they see in us, in U.S. We give blood, precious blood, precious because it buys life, not takes it, precious because it covers us, covers U.S. We hope they too want to be redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, blood given as a ransom, bought with a price. So we stand in long lines in silence, letting our actions speak for us as His one day spoke for Him, giving Blood.
