Gentle Giant"Someday love shall claim his own. Someday right ascend his throne. Someday hidden truth be known; some day, some sweet day." -Lewis J. Bates Having heard nothing but good comments about a certain animated movie gearedfor both young and old alike, I went to the theater to see the film, "Shrek." In the movie, Shrek is an ornery, but lovable ogre, who, due to his largesize and slightly freakish appearance, is feared by most people who cross hispath. Although Shrek dreams of being loved by a fair maiden who would love himin turn, he knows that as reality has it, no woman in her right mind could orwould ever love someone as hideous as him. And so, Shrek exists alone, accepting his lonely fate, until, by amazing circumstances, he comes to meeta beautiful princess. I won't spoil the ending of the movie, but what drew my attention most aboutthis movie was that the main character was not beautiful in the classicalsense of the word, and yet he comes to reign triumphant, saving an entirevillage, fending off numerous enemies, and displaying more character anddepth than most other "normal-looking" men. It is sad that poor Shrek has to endure name-calling and be looked upon withfear and scorn simply due to his different physical appearance. The sadderpicture is that while this movie is pure fiction, within our own society suchtravesties do occur. How often are we all guilty of prejudging someone based on appearance alone? As the ogre, Shrek, suggests in the movie, we are more than what we appear onthe outside, and inside this external shell lies many layers. The questionis, will we take the time to peel the layers so that we may see all men forwho they really are? Just as we should look deeper than the surface of all human beings, sotoo, does our heavenly Father, God see into the very core of our heart. While we may be able to deceive mankind, there is no hiding who we really arefrom the ever-watchful eye of our Creator. All men are deserving of love and kindess. How thankful we should be that Goddoes not use our same overly-critical standards to deem our worthiness of Hislove.
