Who Killed Jesus?

The prison chaplain had just finished sharing the Easter Story of Jesusdying on the cross. The prisoners had sensed the darkness and tragedy ofthe situation. But the chaplain now posed a question to the inmates.

"Tell me," he queried, "who killed Jesus?"

One prisoner shouted out, "It was the Roman soldiers!"Someone over in the corner whispered, "It was that Pilate guy."Another prisoner spoke up, "No, it was the Jews who killed Jesus."

The chaplain smiled and said, "You are all wrong. It was Jesus' Fatherthat killed him."

A murmur filled the room as the prisoners took on this new information.

"Allow me to explain," ventured the chaplain. "Isaiah 53:10 says that itwas the will of God the Father to bruise him; He had put him to grief anddeath. God allowed Jesus' death to become an offering for sin. In otherwords, Jesus suffered so much and died, consequently, because His Fatherallowed it."

The chaplain proceeded to explain to his audience that Jesus identifiedwith them for many of their fathers were cruel and harsh on them, as sons.Jesus was alienated from His Father just like the prisoners feltalienation from their fathers. Many of them had become cruel, harsh, angry and bitter because of a lack of a father-image in their lives andJesus understood that very much.

The chaplain continued, "But the latter part of verse 10 offers hope inthis tragic Easter Story. It reads,'He will see his offspring and prolonghis days, and the will of God will prosper in his hand.'"

Suddenly, the prisoners understood the story. God sent Jesus, His Son, to theearth, allowed the Savior to die on the cross, and now He was giving themnew hope, new opportunities while they were being incarcerated. Yes,Jesus had once felt like them, abandoned and imprisoned, but now He wantedto prolong their days.
