Right Things, Wrong Places

Upon entering her first year of college, Lindsey was surprised to see somany different types of people from all walks of life. What amazed hermost however, were how peers who claimed to seek truth andgoodness did so in paths which seemed far from honest or good.

Jamie, the slender and tall girl from New York, who was Lindsey's roommate, claimed to be a witch. "Oh, we don't practice evil, we just dogood spells and worship nature," Jamie insisted, as she rubbed garlicall over her walls to ward off evil spirits. Another student, Martin, was into trying to predict the future via tarot cards and theOuija board. Every Saturday night at 10 pm, Martin and his friendswould get together, drink beer, and share the secrets the deceased inthe spirit world had revealed to them.

All of these people claimed to be seeking righteous truth, but Lindseycould not help but notice that these people did not seem any more happyor wise than she. Lindsey wondered, "Were these people looking forright things in all the wrong places?"

Lindsey's years in college clearly revealed to her a sad reality, yethow many of us today continue to have the best of intentions whileseeking to fulfill our desires in all the wrong places?

One of the most abused desires is to be loved, yet how many people endup filling this very normal desire with ungodly substitutes asthe misuse of sexual relations, abusive relationships, and various othermedia that do nothing to promote or support healthy love?

If we can so easily fall into detours that pull us farther away from ourgoals, then it is definitely worth looking into how we are filling oursearch for the spiritual, namely, God. For if these media having todo with mind and body can be abused, then the potential for spiritualabuse is present as well.

In the Bible, Jesus is quoted, "I am the way and the truth and the life. Noone comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) We are alsotold, "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."(John 8:32) If truth is supposed to make us free, then why are so manypeople in such bondage? Why do they lack peace, purpose, joy?

The only natural conclusion is they have looked for truth in all thewrong places.

We cannot fill spiritual voids with worldly wisdom and we cannot findGod in a pit of vipers.
