Garage SaleI thought we were downsizing our home, and began to clean out closets. There were assorted items from each room of the house, but the kitchen itemswere most plentiful and ranged from bowls and dishes to stainless steelware, and from trash cans to platters. Unused formal pieces of crystal, sterling silverplatters and candlesticks and goldware were placed in the "for sale" pile, which continued to grow. It was a shame, I thought, that I had accumulated all theses "things" which I haven't used for years. It was time to let them go. No need to keep them if they only sat around gathering dust. In the Bible, 2 Timothy 20-24, God tells us about a well furnished kitchen. "In a well furnished kitchen there are not only crystal goblets and silver platters, but waste cans and compost buckets - some containers used to serve fine meals, other to take out the garbage. We need to become the kind of container God can use - a vessel for honor." How can you do this? "Run away from infantile indulgences. Run after mature righteousness - faith, love and peace - joining those who are in honest and serious prayer before God. Be a gentle listener and a teacher who keeps cool."( taken from "TheMessage" and NIV Bibles) I don't care if God wants to use me to serve fine meals or to take out the garbage, but I want to be a container worthy of Him. To work with thepoor or the wealthy, the healthy or the sick, the prisoners or the prestigious, the young or the old - just let me be a vessel fit for honoring the Lord. It turned out that we did not downsize our house, but I was glad to getrid of unused "things" which were only taking up space in my cupboard. I pray that I will not only remember the spiritual application of this Scripture, but also the practical... not buying more "stuff" to fill up the empty spaces!
