Created for Worship #561

The sons of Korah had a wonderful job. They served in the worship center of ancient Israel, the tabernacle (1 Chronicles 9:19). Their job was not one of high level. They were doorkeepers. Like modern day valets, they stood at the entrance to the tent erected for worship.

These doorkeepers composed a song. One stanza typifies their attitude. "A day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness" (Psalm 84:10). The Old Testament tabernacle was created for worship. GodÂ’s presence was there. Standing in the doorway of the place of worship, where God was pleased to dwell, was a privilege. A single day spent in that place was far better than hundreds of days otherwise occupied.

These doorkeepers also knew God had center stage. He was the center of attention. The very thought of standing at the threshold, on the edge of activity, was enough to fill their hearts with adoration. "How lovely are Your dwelling places, O Lord of hosts! My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God" (Psalm 84:1-2).

We should be like hearted when we gather for worship, look to God, and rejoice in Him.
