Resurrection Hope #552

Put in a bad spot, the apostle Paul defended himself against his detractors as follows. "I admit to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect I do serve the God of our fathers, believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets; having a hope in God, which these men cherish themselves, that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked" (Acts 24:14-15).

What is Paul’s hope as a Christian? It is the resurrection of the dead. Here is his classic statement. "Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed" (1 Corinthians 15:51-52).

This is a hinge upon which Christianity turns. Here is the argument. "If there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain" (1 Corinthians 15:13-14). Furthermore, "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins" (1 Corinthians 15:17). However, "He lives" (2 Corinthians 13:4). "He has risen" (Matthew 28:6).
