Resurrection Life #551If people are married more than once, which spouse will they have in heaven? Some religious lawyers asked Jesus this kind of question. They wanted to trip up the Master. Jesus turned the tables on them. "You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven" (Matthew 22:29-30). Jesus tells us the Scriptures teach the resurrection of the dead. Jesus also maintained His Father has power to raise the dead. In addition, He says life in the resurrection world is not at all like this life. Marriage is something for this life. There will be no marriage in the resurrected state. The reason is simple. Marital love is meant to picture the love Christ has for His church. "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her" (Ephesians 5:25). The "marriage supper of the Lamb" signifies the end of life as we know it (Revelation 19:9). When we enjoy the reality, life with God in eternity, we no longer need the picture. For this reason, Jesus likens life in the resurrected state to that of the angels. They live in bliss. They gladly serve God. So too, the great object of our affections will be the Creator, God alone.
